Just wanted to write and say your plans are fantastic! We have completed our staircase with only the handrail remaining. We have had some fun during the construction. Radius from center of pole to the end of tread is 28 7/16 Handrail will be just over 18' long. I will attach a few photos of what we have built so far.

Thanks again. Very much worth the $20!!!

The stairs look amazing. Photography not so good but I will send better ones when I have them.

To me it appears Claire used plywood for the handrail, not something I've seen done before.

I have made a template out of masonite and happy with tread and diameter. My circle is 78 .74 inches and the circumference of the circle is 247 1/4 inches The total height that I am going to is 96.4 inches

I want to get there in 3/4 of a turn. I recon length of a hand rail for the 3/4 turn should be 16ft 7 1/2 in The first floor is going in this week and then we will be putting in the loft floor so I have to get moving on this pretty quickly, looking forward to it though.

Old railway sleepers that have been recovered and planked - The wood is a light African teak. Some of the pics show the raw sleepers and the finished look when oiled. Everyone loves them.

Once again many thanks for the plans.

Regards John

John got to liking spiral stairs, so he also built one using steel for outside.

I am making a small spiral staircase to access a loft for my wife's kindergarten class. I have attached a few pictures of the final product. My wife is a kindergarten teacher and she wanted a loft for her classroom. The upper section is for reading and the bottom section is a work center.

I mounted a 3" diameter steel conduit pole for structure. I cut 4" PCV pipe and glued 1\\4" inside to pick up the "slack.". The PVC will be painted black to match balusters.

It's been a year now and my steps are done (except for putting plugs in the screw holes). Also, need to make a finial for the top of the pole.

Anyhow, the center pole is 3" rigid conduit and the spacers are cut from leftover cutoff "torque tubes" from where I work. I work in a machine shop and we have a couple of CNC bandsaws. Really made cutting the spacers simple.

These stairs are in my pole barn where I make ink pens and biodiesel. Thanks very much for the detailed plans and the engineering you have done.

Still loving the steps, they haven't moved or loosened at all. Fantastic engineering on your part.

Regardless of whether they stick out into the hall or not, they really suit the room and fit right in with the rest of our pine.

I figured out yesterday that the balusters add an inch. I went back through my calculations and realized when you divide the circumference by 14 treads (13, plus the landing) that the balusters would then add 1 inch to each tread. It is strange that my scale drawing, in which I had allowed for the 1" thick balusters showed my spiral working out to match the landing. I just might have to live with the bottom tread sticking out into the hall on the main floor by a foot. Its taking me so long to build the stairs because they are in my cottage, which I am also building, and I only get there on weekends.

It has been a real challenge to build this staircase, and of course it is not finished yet. But I have enjoyed the project so much, it has been a blast.
